1. لمن أمدح بالشعر

    لمن أقصد لا أدري

    To whom shall I dedicate my poetry?

    I do not know to whom I should direct it.

  2. إلى من إن دجا خطب

    ونابت نوب الدهر

    When times grew dark with worry,

    And the turns of fate alternated,

  3. فقد والشفع والوتر

    ومن أقسم بالفجر

    The even and the odd were lost,

    And the dawn was sworn upon.

  4. تحيرت فما ادري ال

    ذي أصنع في أمري

    I grew confused, not knowing what

    I should do in my matter,

  5. على أني بالده

    ر وبالأيام ذو خبر

    Although I am experienced

    With the times and days.

  6. ولكني للحير

    ة سكران بلا سكر

    But confusion has intoxicated me

    Without drink.

  7. كأني لست مخلوقاً

    لغير الجهد والضر

    It is as if I were created

    Only for toil and harm.

  8. ومذ كنت فمدفوع

    إلى الفاقة والفقر

    Since I was pushed

    To poverty and destitution,

  9. فما أصنع في مصر

    إذا لم أحظ في مصر

    What shall I do in Egypt

    If I have no luck in Egypt?

  10. وفي الآفاق أقوام

    يميلون إلى شعري

    And in the horizons are people

    Who incline toward my poetry.

  11. ونبئت بأن القو

    م لا يخلون من ذكري

    And I was told that the people

    Do not lack mention of me.

  12. ففيم الترك للسير

    وهل في ذاك من عذر

    Why then abandon the journey

    When there is no excuse in that?

  13. وقد قدمت أثقالي

    وسيري غرة الشهر

    I have brought my burdens

    And traveled the first of the month.

  14. فأما أكثر الحمق

    فقد سيرت في البحر

    But most of the foolishness

    I have sailed into the sea,

  15. وباقية معي يذه

    ب في البر على ظهري

    While the rest remains with me

    Carried on land upon my back.

  16. ولا أترك في مصر

    لذكر الحمق من أثر

    I shall leave in Egypt

    No trace of the foolishness of mention.

  17. فمن بعدي ليطبي

    ه في النظم وفي النثر

    So let whoever comes after me

    Delight in prosody and prose,

  18. ومن يلعب في الرأس

    من العصر إلى العصر

    And let whoever plays with his head

    From age until age,

  19. ومن من شدة الصفع

    له رأس بلا شعر

    And let whoever from the severity of blows

    Has a head without hair,

  20. ومن هامته أقوى

    على الصفع من الصخر

    And whoever's skull is harder

    Than rock against blows,

  21. ومن يضرط في الذقن

    بلا كيل ولا حرز

    And whoever trumpets with his chin

    Without measure or limit,

  22. ومن ينتف بالدبق

    سبالات بني البظر

    And whoever plucks out his whiskers

    And the moustaches of the youths.

  23. ولكني لا كنت

    لما في من الكبر

    But I was not

    For the grandeur that was in me,

  24. إذا أمراني الصفع

    تجشأت من الدبر

    If I was ordered blows,

    I shrank away in retreat.

  25. وهيهات ترى صفعاً

    لغيري أبداً يمري

    Alas! You will never see blows

    Upon another pass me by.

  26. ألا يا منهى الجود

    ويا ذا المجد والفخر

    O culmination of generosity!

    O you of glory and pride!

  27. ويا ابن السادة الغر

    ويا ابن الأنجم الزهر

    O son of noble chiefs!

    O son of shining stars!

  28. ويا أبهى من الشمس

    ضياء ومن البدر

    O more radiant than the sun

    In splendor and than the moon!

  29. لكاذا أنت لا تعدي

    على الأيام والدهر

    Why do you not chastise

    The days and fate?

  30. همام طاهر الذيل

    سليل السادة الغر

    Pure-tailed gallant one,

    Scion of noble chiefs!

  31. كريم الأصل والخيم

    رحيب الباع والصدر

    Generous by origin and nature,

    Open of hand and chest!

  32. جواد غير مدفوع

    عن الإفضال والبر

    Freely bestowing, not prevented

    From benevolence and righteousness!

  33. وما زال إلى كل

    له عارفة تسري

    He has never ceased to extend

    To all who know him, his hands.

  34. لقد عمت أياديه

    جميع البدو والحضر

    His hands have encompassed

    All the nomads and the settled!
