سلام على الربع ربع الجدا

سلام على تمره واللبا

سلام عليه سلام امرئ

معنى بتذكار ما قد مضى

Greetings to it, greetings of a man

Who means to remember what has passed

سلام عليه فكم موقف

وقفناه فيه ندير الدلا

Greetings to it, how many a stand

Did we take in it, making the bucket spin

لعهدي فيه شيوخ لنا

غلاظ الرقاب عراض اللحى

In it I have elders for us

Thick-necked, with flowing beards

إذا ما قبضت على لحية

وناديت بطني أجاب الخرا

If I grasped the beard

And called to my stomach, it answered quickly

وكنا من الظرف لو أننا

أقمنا نصافع شهراً ولا

And we were, if we stayed

Exchanging slaps for a month or more

نعيب الوفاء ولهفي على

أخادع من لا يعيب الوفا

I do not fault loyalty, though I pine

For deceivers who do not fault loyalty

ولا عذر ألا أدير اللطام

إذا الصفع دار وكلي قفا

No excuse but to turn the reins

When the slap goes around and I am all neck

وقد كنت تبت ولكنني

إذا الصفع دار أتاني الجشا

I had repented but when

The slap went around, frivolity came to me

فلا تترك الصفع جهلاً به

فما أطيب الصفع لولا العمى

So do not neglect the slap in ignorance

For how fine a slap is, were it not for blindness

ومالي أكاتمكم قصتي

وأضرب بالطبل تحت الكسا

Why should I hide my story from you

And beat the drum beneath the shirt

إذا كان في الصيف لي جنة

لأية حال أذم الفرا

If in summer I had a garden

For what purpose would I visit tombs?

ولم أكسب الحمق لكنني

خلقت رقيعاً كما ترى

I have not gained folly, but I

Was created scatterbrained, as you see

لقد فقت فيه كما الفارس

ي في الرمي فاق جميع الورى

I have wasted it as the horseman

Wastes his throwing, surpassing all people

كأن البنادق طوع له

فهن يصبن له ما اشتهى

As if rifles obeyed him

Pouring for him whatever he desired

إذا ما رمى طائراً حطه

ولو أنه بمكان السها

If he shot a bird, he felled it

Even if it were in place of an arrow

فيالك من موقف مبهج

عجيب ومن منظر مشتهى

Oh what a delightful stand

Wondrous and a coveted sight

فعيد الطيور به مأتم

وأضيافه عنده في القرى

The feast of birds in it is a funeral

And its guests in the villages
