1. By your life, it is a grievous loss,

    a calamity tremendous and grave.

  2. We have lost one—may God’s blessings follow unceasingly

    upon him whenever a pitch-black night grows dark,

  3. whenever the camels creak onward toward the Sacred House,

    and whenever the stars rise over the earth.

  4. By your life, this affliction touches no few alone;

    the affliction is universal.

  5. May the season’s first rain, pelting and profuse,

    water the grave where Hammad now lies.

  6. For in it glory and lofty honor have come to rest,

    and in it might and ancient pride.

  7. After his death, will any hero be summoned

    to face a crisis, or will it be said, “A noble man remains”?

  8. The day one announced his death to us, we seemed—

    with sorrows ravaging our very souls—

  9. like bereaved mothers whose grief, throughout the nights,

    though long ages pass, remains abiding grief.

  10. He was our springtime in every season of drought,

    when the clouds withheld their downpour.

  11. Beautiful in deed, praised for his character—

    generosity and noble disposition adorned all he did.
