1. Leave off the traces of vanished dwellings,

    And leave descriptions of the wastelands;

  2. Turn away from mention of a people

    Who have dwelt overlong on wine.

  3. Leave, too, descriptions of the girdles

    About the waists of maidens.

  4. Describe a splendid loaf,

    Mirrored by the daytime sun,

  5. Or by the full moon’s image when it

    Reaches perfect roundness.

  6. For my poetry is beautiful only

    When describing it.

  7. And that is because, long ago,

    For its sake I cast off all restraint.
