  1. هدهدتُ حبي في المِهادْ

    ووأدتهُ قبل الفطامْ

    I cradled my love in the cradle,

    And smothered it before weaning.

  2. ميعاده يومَ المَعادْ

    يومٌ تُعادُ به العظامْ

    Its tryst is the day of the return,

    The day when bones are restored.

  3. أملٌ أضاء به الفؤادْ

    لما خبا ساد الظلامْ

    A hope that lit up my heart,

    When sadness prevailed darkness.

  4. الشوق عندي في ازديادْ

    وعلى الهوى مني السلامْ

    Yearning for me is on the rise,

    And my regards to passion.

  5. عَفَتِ البلادُ مع العبادْ

    واستثقلتْ نفسي الكلامْ

    The countries became devoid of people,

    And talking became hard on myself.

  6. قد هَدَّني طولُ البِعادْ

    لما تركتُكِ في الرَّغامْ

    The length of distance has guided me,

    When I left you in the sand.

  7. لما دفنتُكِ يا سُعادْ

    أسقيتِني الموتَ الزؤامْ

    When I buried you, O happiness,

    You quenched me with perpetual death.

  8. حاربتُ نومي والوِسادْ

    والقلبُ أمسى كالحطامْ

    I fought my sleep and pillow,

    While my heart turned into debris.
