O sleepy-eyed one, our enemies have prevailed

And rejoiced at our decline and separation

Stop pouring us cups of pure wine

And make us drink again of sadness and sorrow

The hopes of union left us hastily

Until we were far from our wishes

Our souls surrendered to the darkness of despair

Except for the pain from the memory of our meeting

Yesterday the leaves filled us with joy

Today if they sing they would grieve us

For you have heard the commotion of our slanderer

And you have obeyed the gossip of passion about us

I did not think, O object of my hopes

That talebearers would make you shun us

And that what the envious claimed had power

To reassure your heart for a moment

That you would prefer doubt if

Suspicions were cast by the deluded amongst us

And that you were determined against our excuses

And heard not them, but heard our critics

You claimed we broke our covenant with you

And that another form allured and helped us

But we had no intimate but you in life

And none made us stray but those who make us stray

You and us are two stars orbiting

In a heaven spun by the love of our past days

However much we quarrel, longing unites us

Or if we part, love brings us together

So what you see today of my patience and composure

Is for dignity, which instructed us
