Be noble—or do without whatever is dear.
You will be relieved of the company of a clinging sorrow.
And let the heart roam through Jerusalem, in the Mas—
—jid al-Aqsa; there, give the trunk a shake.
And water it whenever it complains of thirst, from—
Silwan’s spring, where its trickling flow was blessed.
For in Silwan alone lies its quenching,
and it drives from the heart wounds that cut deep.
So wash the heart with solace until—
you see it no longer provoked by anything that befalls.
