You grew addicted to sleepless nights, longing for her shores.
You were addicted to longing for its late nights of wakefulness,
So cross aboard a vessel of planks, like one who has crossed.
So cross over the planks as one who crossed over.
أكلَّماwhenever? (interrogative) قلتَyou said ياO عرشَthrone الرؤىthe visions أَرِنيshow me yourself

أنْظُرْ إليكَ يقولُ انظُر فسوفَ تَرى ؟ !
Whenever you say, 'O throne of visions, show yourself to me,
Whenever you say, "O throne of visions show me!"
that I may look upon you,' does it say, 'Look, and you will see'?!
It says, "Look at me!" as if to say, "Look and you will see?!"

And you began ascending from one level to another;
And you ascended from one sphere to another,
When you arrive, embrace—alas for you—the moon.
When you arrive, embrace it - what a splendid moon!

You began your night journey from Shinqit; so recite there
You began your journey from Chinguetti, so follow its course
to humankind an eighth of the surah 'The Poets.'
Through the land, as a price for a chapter of poetry.

على امرئ القيس لما أزمع السفرا
You seek kingship, so a companion weeps in sorrow
You seek a kingdom, so its sorrowful owner weeps
for Imruʾ al-Qays when he resolved to journey.
For Imru' al-Qais when he intended to travel.

And Abu Dhabi chooses you, as is her custom,
And Abu Dhabi chooses you as is its custom,
a mother meeting her son after both had waited.
A mother meeting her son after waiting so long.

فكيفَ في لَحَظاتٍ أصبَحتْ ثمرا ؟!
Your lips were withered all along the road;
Your lips were withered throughout the journey,
so how, in moments, did they become fruit?!
So how in mere moments did they become fruit?

The verse was statues you adorned;
Poetry was statues adorned,
and when criticism touched it, it became a human being.
And when criticism touched it, it became human.

طورا تميل و تأتي مرةً نُشُرا
Twenty are aboard the ship; the winds
On the ship are twenty winds,
sometimes sway them, and sometimes come as gentle breezes.
Inclining it one moment, erect the next.

O sea, I am no survivor if they drown,
O sea, I cannot save them if they drown,
nor the prince if they do not become princes.
Nor command them if they do not obey.
