So dreams may lie upon a field of my language,

I strive for the letters to rise higher.

And I create a bird from the clay of sorrows,

To breathe spirit into it as a rhyme to be recited.

I have accompanied the throngs fleeing sorrow,

Hoping a cloud may carry water and shade.

I search for a land where humankind is safe,

And where can I find a handspan without the slain?!

Why have we inherited killing since the time of Adam,

And history has never ceased to praise the blade?!

I have lost faith in all who crawl toward the heights,

If the bridge to victory is their wounding of a child.

So that humankind may be happy, I remain a lover

Who embroiders the garments of violets and oleanders.

I am a curlew whose song is for the grieving,

And a crucified man's smile for his bereaved grandmother.

And in the heart's expanses I have a hermitage of visions,

And I have been granted a kingdom in love that never fades.

I will draw water for the weeping from the Zamzam of contentment,

And even if I die thirsty, their share of water comes first.
