    With it I shall give the thirsty drink—such is my nature.

    And I put others first, so people know whose footsteps I follow.

    My share of the desert is the nobility of its conscience,

    And that love is a lifetime, even if that lifetime is spent bleeding.

    إليها عروجي كلما ارتد لي طرف

    I purified myself with longing and chose a star;

    To her I ascend whenever my gaze returns.

    So she sought refuge in the lashes of letters and surrendered,

    And there, syntax and morphology took charge of my affairs.

    And I am kin to the cloud that grows clear after her.

    A stranger, yet my family's home dwells in my eye.

    My fingertips will weep when the palm disowns them.

    فلي كلما اصطفوا وراءهم صف

    I recalled crawling among them in the prayer ground;

    So whenever they formed ranks, I had a row behind them.

    و حين سفير الصبح سورتها الكهف

    And as I spelled out letters, joy would flood my grandmother;

    And at dawn's herald, her surah was 'The Cave.'

    You see me alone now—how swift is decay!

    The age of ink has grown distant, and pages have faded away.

    And Shinqit, the light of my eye, asks who I am,

    As though I had neither book nor shelf there.

    She says, 'Who is weeping? Are you not her sheikh's son?'

    And here I am—my striving is her lean, thoroughbred steed.

    I pass through the world, a ruin; no hand

    Points; there is neither 'move on' nor 'halt.'

    فمن سوف يبكيني إذا نزل الحتف

    All my life I shall weep for the tread of their pilgrims;

    So who will weep for me when death descends?

    And we had a paradise among the orchards,

    And here it slumbers beneath the sand through our indifference.

    فكيف بشنقيطين خانهما الإلف

    And a youth tormented by two loves is surely dead;

    Then what of two Shinqits betrayed by their beloved companion?

    And this estrangement, O home, was never our choice,

    But it is weakness after our strength.

    فيا لعيون لا تجف إذا تجفو

    And our tears are red from the sorrows of distance;

    Alas for eyes that never dry when you turn away!

    And our mounts traveled the road of the Forty,

    And we had our share of every noble deed.

    She is the name, and the world a description of her stature.

    When radiant faces gather in our abode,

    Then that is a sowing the harvest will follow.

    Is there, then, a rescuer for these dwellings and their outpouring,

    And whatever treasures the roof may conceal?

    And whoever had glory and squandered his glory,

    Has neither ransom nor redemption among the people.
