عَنfrom فِناناour courtyard اليَومَtoday ثُمَّthen اِنتَقِليmove away
Sister of Jassas, hide yourself and depart
O sister of a spy, hide and depart from us
from our courtyard today; then move away.
Leave our abode today then move on
أَنتِyou أَلقَيتِyou cast وَأَغرَيتِand you incited بِناagainst us
سَتَرَيْyou will see مِنّاfrom us ضِرامَthe blaze of الشُّعُلِthe flames
You sowed strife and incited others against us;
You have tempted and seduced us
you will see a blaze of flames from us.
You will see flames of fire from us
كُنتِyou were بِالأَمسِyesterday تَغُرِّينَbeguiling أَخيmy brother
وَتُمَنِّيهِand you filled him with hopes بِماof what لَمnot يَفعَلِhe had done
Yesterday you were beguiling my brother,
Yesterday you were flirting with my brother
and filling him with hopes of deeds he had not done,
And promising him what has not been done
وَتَقولينَand you were saying أَخيmy brother صِهرُكَyour brother-in-law ماthere is none
مِثلُهُlike him مِمَّنamong those whom أَرىI see بِالمِعبَلِwith the broad-headed arrow
and saying, “My brother, your brother-in-law—there is none
You used to say my brother, your brother-in-law is unmatched
like him among those I see bearing broad-headed arrows.”
Among all I see in gatherings
ماnot لَهُمfor them مِنany حُجَّةٍjustification مَعروفَةٍrecognized
لَوif رَأواthey saw حَقّاa rightful claim لَأَضحىit would have become مُنجَلِيclear
They have no recognized justification;
They have no known argument
had they seen a rightful claim, it would have become clear.
If they saw the truth it would become a sickle to me
ياO كُلَيبٌKulayb كُنتَyou were جاهِيmy honor وَلَقَدand indeed
جارَacted unjustly جَسّاسٌJassas بِقَتلِby killing البَطَلِthe hero
O Kulayb, you were my honor; and indeed
O Kulaib, you were arrogant but a spy succeeded
Jassas acted unjustly in killing the hero.
In killing the hero
فَأَتاهُthen he came to him وَهوَwhile he عَنهُof him غافِلunaware
وَحَباهand bestowed on him طَعنَةًa thrust فيin المَقتَلِa vital spot
He came upon him while the hero was unaware of him,
He came upon him unawares
and dealt him a thrust in a vital spot.
And stabbed him mortally
فَاِبتَلانيso he afflicted me وَدَهانيand overwhelmed me بشجاwith grief
قَدalready مَضىhas passed ليfor me وَشَجاand grief ليof mine مُعتَلِيrising high
So he afflicted me and overwhelmed me with grief
So he tested me and covered me in wounds
that I have already borne, and grief of mine that rises high.
My suffering and pain have passed their limit

أَسَداًa lion كانَwas فخارَthe pride of المَحفَلِthe assembly
Join me in mourning, my brothers, then lament
Congratulate me my brothers, then mourn
a lion who was the pride of the assembly,
A lion who was pride of gatherings

يَمنَعُholds back الأَقرانَthe rivals وَسطَamid القَسطَلِthe battle-dust
a mountain of might, and a valiant champion in battle,
He warded off glory and zeal in battle
who held his rivals at bay amid the battle-dust.
Preventing peers in the midst of conflict
لَمnot يَكُنhe was نِكساًa weakling وَلاnor ذاone with مَيلٍwavering

عِندَat وَقعِthe striking of البِيضِbright swords بِالمُنتَعَلِupon the shod foot
He was no weakling, nor one who wavered
He was never weak nor wavering
when bright swords struck at shod feet.
When the eggs fell in the ostrich nest
اندُبواlament لَيثاًa lion عَفِيراًlying in the dust بِالدِّماcovered in blood

Lament a lion in the dust, covered in blood,
Mourn a fierce, bloody lion
scrabbling at the earth, felled from on high.
Who scans the ground for victims from the heights
أَسعِدونيjoin me in mourning لاdo not تَلُومونيblame me فيfor البُكاweeping
إِنَّindeed فيwithin الأَحشاءthe entrails ناراًa fire تَصطَليburns
Join me in mourning; do not blame me for weeping.
Congratulate me, do not blame me for crying
Indeed, a fire burns within my entrails.
For there is a fire burning in my guts
ياO قَتِيلاًslain one قَتلُهُhis being killed جَرَّعَنيmade me drink

O slain one, whose killing made me drink
Oh slain one, whose murder has forced me to drink
upon losing him, an infusion of bitter colocynth.
The bitterness of wormwood at his loss
صِرتُI became فيin لُجَّةِthe depths of بَحرٍa sea زاخِرٍsurging

I find myself in the depths of a surging sea,
I am in the midst of a raging sea
rising at one moment, sinking at the next.
Rising and falling in turn
لَيتَنيif only I ماnot عِشتُhad lived يَوماًa day بَعدَهُafter him

Would that I had not lived a day after him!
Would that I had not lived a day after him
Would that my appointed end had hastened my death!
Would that my death had drawn near

فَهُموميfor my sorrows بَعدَهُafter him لاdo not تَنجَليclear away
Take away my reason and my soul after him,
After him, rob me of my sanity and soul
for my sorrows after him do not lift.
For my anxieties after him do not settle
لاmay not صَفاbe serene عَيشٌlife وَقَدand already غابَhas departed فَتىًa young man

لَيتَif only نَفسيmy soul خَرَجَتhad left مِنfrom هَيكَليmy bodily frame
May life never be serene, now that a young man is gone;
No life has joy when a hero has gone
would that my soul had left my body's frame!
Would that my soul had left my body

Who will bring me to the protected haven after him?
Who will convey to me protection after him
Who will bring me to a lofty station?
Who will convey to me the noble one

A hero, a mighty lion, when he appeared,
A hero, audacious when he appeared
beneath him a chestnut steed, like a fox cub.
Beneath him the blond turned like dates
مَنone whom تَفِرُّflee الخَيلُthe horses فيin الرَّوعِterror لَهُbecause of him

One before whom horses flee in terror,
Horses flee in dread of him
a hero like a lion with cubs.
A hero like the impenetrable Hizabir

O sons of Taghlib, do not hold back,
O clan of Taghlib, do not delay
and seek vengeance for the king of the host.
And seek vengeance for the slain king
إِنَّنيindeed I قاتِلَةٌa slayer مَقتُولَةٌone slain

Indeed, I am both slayer and slain;
I am a slain woman seeking retaliation
so may the days bring me recompense.
Perhaps time will bring me justice

Bakr has fled and abandoned its home;
Bakr has fled and abandoned his abode
it has bolted like stampeding ostriches.
Scattered like frightened ostriches

O sons of Bakr, come forward; gird yourselves!
O sons of Bakr, come and roll up your sleeves
Tomorrow we shall destroy you with the sword,
For tomorrow we will annihilate you with swords

With men unlike any among you
sons of Taghlib beneath the battle-dust.
From the clan of Taghlib in the valley
فَلَقَدfor indeed حُمِّلناwe were burdened ماwhat لَوif بَعضُهُpart of it

For we have been burdened with what, if even part of it
For we have endured what, had some of it
were laid on our camels, they could not bear.
Been placed on our camels, they could not have carried it
ياO بَنيsons of بَكرٍBakr كَفاكُمis enough for you فِعلُكُمyour deed

O sons of Bakr, your deed is enough for you;
O sons of Bakr, enough of your deeds
do not blame us if we have not acted rashly.
Do not blame us if we do not act ignorant
لَوif قُتِلتُمyou were killed كُلُّكُمall of you قاطِبَةًaltogether

If you were killed, all of you, altogether,
If you all were killed to the last man
all of you together would not equal him.
You would not all be equal to one of ours
