Do my people realize that the land holds bounty,
Do my people know that in this land lies gain,
And that it holds treasure, and in its soil lies unrefined gold,
That in it is a treasure and in its soil, fertility.

And in its forests, fertility, beauty, and delight,
In its forests lie bounty, beauty and joy,
And in its depths, oil, and in its sea, pearls?
In its depths, oil, and in its seas, pearls.

There, whoever squandered our rights has enjoyed himself,
Those who denied us our rights enjoyed it,
And whoever oppressed us, roaring like a lion,
And oppressed us while roaring like lions.

And orphaned children and made our blood flow,
They orphaned children and shed our blood,
And strengthened the pillar of ignorance—and ignorance is more dangerous.
And cemented ignorance, which is most perilous.

And he hides the land's treasures, though they gleam,
They hid the land's treasures though bright they were,
And steals them secretly and openly, and tyrannizes,
Stealing them openly, by force and tyranny.

And its people spent nights hungry, and whenever
Hunger grows cruel, they cry out, chanting, 'When will dawn come?'
Hunger grew fierce, they cried "When will dawn break?"

Sons of my homeland, the country is indeed poor
My homeland, the land is poor without
For lack of men of knowledge—and knowledge is radiant.
Men of knowledge, and knowledge is light.

I call for schools to be established; if only I could
I call for building schools - would that
See the seed of hopes grow and bear fruit.
I see the seeds of hope grow and bear fruit.

I call, yet the call yields nothing but sorrow,
I call in vain, for calling yields only sorrow,
And from the mine of sorrows it imports embers.
And from the mine of sorrows comes burning embers.

Can ears afflicted with deafness and dulled hearing hear?
Do my calls fall on deaf ears? Can poetry
And can poems awaken one whom the grave has embraced?
Awaken those whose eternal sleep no din can stir?
