    نادى من الغيبِ غُفاةَ البَشَر

    I heard a voice calling in the hour before dawn;

It called from the unseen to humankind's sleepers:

Rise! Fill the cup of wishes before

The hand of Fate fills the cup of life.

Do not occupy your mind with times gone by,

Nor with life's future before its time.

And seize from the present its pleasures,

For security is not in the nature of nights.

Tomorrow lies hidden in the unseen; today is mine.

And how often expectations of the future prove false!

And I am not so heedless as to see

My world's beauty and not contemplate it.

The heart has been worn out by love of beauty,

And the breast has grown tight with what cannot be said.

O Lord, does this thirst please You,

While water flows before me, clear and sweet?

It is more fitting for this heart to beat,

And to be burned in the blaze of love.

How wasted was the day that passed me by

Without loving or being passionately in love!

Awake, light-hearted one! This predawn hour

Has called: Leave sleep, and croon to the string.

For sleep has not lengthened a life, nor

    Has long wakefulness shortened lifespans.

For how often night has followed day,

And long has this orbit endured with the stars.

So walk gently, for this dust

Is made of eyes with a bewitching contrast of black and white.

    واغنم من الحاضرِ أمنَ اليقين

    Do not make the soul desolate with fear of conjectures;

And seize from the present the security of certainty.

For in the dust, alike are one departing

Tomorrow and one gone thousands of years ago.

    فإنما الأيامُ مثلُ السّحاب

    Quench the heart's blaze with honey-sweet saliva;

For the days are but like clouds,

And our life is a phantom of fancy; so take

Your share of it before youth passes.
