جَدِّدْrenew حَيَاتَكَyour life بِالصِّيَامِthrough fasting
جَدِّدْ حَيَاتَكَ بِالصِّيَامِ
فَبِالصِّيَامِfor through fasting غِذَاءُnourishment رُوحِكْyour soul
فَبِالصِّيَامِ غِذَاءُ رُوحِكْ
Renew your life through fasting.

For fasting is nourishment for your soul.
For through fasting your soul is nourished.
دَاوِtreat الَّذِيthat which تَشْكُوyou suffer from بِتَقْوَىthrough reverence for
دَاوِ الَّذِي تَشْكُو بِتَقْوَى
اللَّهِGod تَبْرَاyou will be healed مِنْfrom قُرُوحِكْyour sores
اللَّهِ تَبْرَا مِنْ قُرُوحِكْ
Treat the wounds of which you complain with reverence
Treat what ails you through reverence for
for God, and you will be healed of your sores.

وَاغْنَمْand seize أُوَيْقَاتِbrief moments التَّجَلِّيillumination
وَاغْنَمْ أُوَيْقَاتِ التَّجَلِّي
فِيon الطَّرِيقِthe road إِلَىtoward نُزُوحِكْyour departure
فِي الطَّرِيقِ إِلَى نُزُوحِكْ
Seize the brief moments of illumination
And seize the brief moments of illumination
on the road toward your departure.

اشْحَذْhone سُمُوَّكَyour elevation عَنْabove حَيَاةِa life of
اشْحَذْ سُمُوَّكَ عَنْ حَيَاةِ
اللَّغْوِidle talk وَادْأَبْand persevere فِيin طُمُوحِكْyour ambition
اللَّغْوِ وَادْأَبْ فِي طُمُوحِكْ
Whet your headlong drive away from a life
Hone your striving to rise above a life
of diversion, and persevere in your aspiration.
Of idle talk, and persevere in your ambition.
وَارْقَand ascend الذُّرَاthe summits وَدَعِand leave الثَّرَىthe earth
وَارْقَ الذُّرَا وَدَعِ الثَّرَى
طَالَhas lasted long المُقَامُthe stay عَلَىupon سُفُوحِكْyour slopes
طَالَ المُقَامُ عَلَى سُفُوحِكْ
Ascend the summits and leave the earth behind—
And ascend the summits, and leave the earth behind;
long have you lingered upon your foothills.
Long have you dwelt upon your slopes.
