Here I am in the abode of Prophethood, O world,

fulfilling the sacred duties of faith.

I ask myself in reverence: Could it be

that I have cleansed my cloak of every stain?

How many a prayer have I prayed, yet never did

the holiness of its verses pass beyond the bounds of my tongue!

How many a fast have I spent enduring hunger,

while forgetting the hungry among my brothers!

How often I stoned Satan, while this heart of mine

    lay weary in Satan’s snares!

Lord, forgive me if I have lived my faith as words—

barren words—and never lived it as meaning.

I am of a nation whose guarded realm is overrun

by its own ages of ignorance, without so much as leave.

Disparate creeds have torn our unity apart,

    and leaders—a clique of slaves.

They conditioned us to defeat and cowardice,

and life, in part, is nothing but conditioning.

So we acquiesced. May God never bless

servile endurance or a coward’s tears.

“O son of Abdulaziz!”—and glory rose in defiance.

He listened and said, “Who called me?”

I said, “That wounded one in Jerusalem—

in Sinai, on both banks of the Jordan, on the Golan.”
