    My sister's handwriting was not unfamiliar to me.

    Indeed, my sister always writes to me.

    Yesterday she told me of my family, and of

    the ache of longing and the remoteness of home.

    What might she be saying to me today?

    What, I wonder, has she not said?

    And I unfolded the sheet ... I found nothing

    but a single, terse line.

    إن أختي كتبت في عجل

    And with effort I deciphered part of it;

    indeed, my sister had written in haste.

    ربما بعد قليل ينجلي

    There was something vague in it ... about Ali;

    perhaps it would soon become clear.

    And I stopped ... I did not finish ... and within me

    were the tremors of a frightened supplicant.

    And Ali appeared to me, clad

    in the brightest robes woven from the threads of dawn,

    merry in his glances, proud in his stride,

    easy in speech, sweet in his shyness.
