    فاغضبي يا ذرا الجبال وثوري

    The slope has become a playground for eagles;

so rage, O mountain summits, and revolt!

Indeed, the wound has a cry; so send it forth

into the worlds' hearing as the hiss of a blazing fire.

And cast pride down, a bloodied carcass,

beneath the feet of your drunken age.

Gather up, O mountain summits, the eagle's remains,

and hurl them at the breasts of the ages.

Indeed, he no longer paints the star's eyelid with kohl,

    proudly, with a scattered feather.

He abandoned the eyrie, dazed, and over his eyes

lay something of the final farewell.

Leaving behind him processions of clouds,

    tumbling from their enchanted horizon.

How often they bent over him, sprinkling

upon him the kiss of drunken forenoon.

He descended to the slope, folding his wings

    over every buried aspiration.

Then flocks of birds vied with one another in

fleeing harm and recoiling in fright.

Do not fly away, wanderer of the slope, for the eagle—

if you knew him, you would not fly away.

Weakness has plucked out his talons, and blood has been drawn from

his shoulders by the tempests of fate.

And the dignity that spreads over him

is the remnant of an inheritance from the remotest ages.

    The eagle stood hungry, writhing,

over a carcass strewn upon the sands.

And the scrawny lesser birds pushed him aside

with tender talons and short wings.

Then a shudder coursed through him from the madness

of pride, and he shivered like one stricken with cold.

And he went on, dragging across the dust-gray horizon

the wreckage of a worm-eaten frame.

And when he reached the darkness and passed beyond

the reach of thought, from the heart of the ether

a cry thundered from him; the horizons sizzled,

burning hot from its far-spreading blaze.

And he fell, a corpse, upon the lofty summit,

in the embrace of its far-spreading blaze.

O eagle, shall I return as you returned,

or has the slope already killed my power to feel?
