O bride of glory, exult and trail

Through our abodes the trains of meteors.

You will see no handful of sand upon her

That has not been perfumed with a free, unbowed man's blood.

And fell short of attaining its aim.

And the arrogance of the nights lay prostrate before her,

With softened fang and blunted claw.

Right never dies, however hard the blows

The usurper's fist delivers to its cheeks.

And advanced gracefully, procession after procession.

So it prepared him for a wider horizon.

He rose for conquest, and beneath him was bloodied

In every eyelid stained with earth.

A dream that passed away, yet left unwounded

The honor of the endeavor and the nobility of the aim.

O bride of glory, long has our reunion lasted,

After the exile's burning longing had lasted long.

Our generations grew drunk on their pride,

And slumbered, heedless of a fickle age's guile.

We awoke, and behold, our necks

Were burdened with the foreigner's chains.

So we called you, but heard nothing except

A sigh from your sorrowing breast.

We knew your costly bridal dower, so we did not

Cheapen the dower, nor count the cost.

So we bore you the wreath of fidelity,

That did not yield to the blazing giant.

How many a Maysalun of ours has shaken

From its two wings the dust of weariness!

How often our swords glanced off in an arena,

And our horses stumbled in an arena,

    From a faltering, tumultuous struggle

    To a faltering, tumultuous struggle.

As it voiced it amid sorrow and anguish?

Who will aid the sons of captive women, who boarded

The most enticing vessel toward white hopes?

And when did they wave a banner against us

That was not folded away among worthless spoils?

Over the breast of weeping honor!
