May rain and care bless the days that stir our longing,

From where the hot south winds sometimes come.

They appear to us, rising from the passes of al-Ḍamr,

As though their peaks were draped in crowns.

A hot south wind my body delights in when it wafts,

Like a Hadrami bestowing musk and sweet basil.

Oh, how welcome the night visitor who called on us late at night,

Between al-Dhāriʿayn and al-Akhrāb, whoever he was!

You conjured Mālik’s likeness for me—oh, what a lovely likeness!

Whether human or jinn, whatever he was.

What do you remember of a land in Yemen,

Yet not remember the one who spent the evening in Jawzān?

I deliberately deceive myself to keep from remembering you,

    As a sober-minded person deceives a drunkard.
