إِنّاindeed we وَإِنand even though كُنّاwe were أَسِنَّةَspearheads قَومِناour people
إِنّا وَإِن كُنّا أَسِنَّةَ قَومِنا
وَكانَand there was لَناfor us فيهِمamong them مَقامٌstanding مُقَدَّمُforemost
وَكانَ لَنا فيهِم مَقامٌ مُقَدَّمُ
We, though we were the spearheads of our people,
Though we are the eloquent ones of our people
And held a foremost place among them,
And we have amongst them an elevated position
لَنَصفَحُwe surely pardon عَنfor أَشياءَthings مِنهُمfrom them تَريبُناunsettle us
لَنَصفَحُ عَن أَشياءَ مِنهُم تَريبُنا
وَنصدفُand we turn away عَنfrom ذيone possessing الجَهلِfolly مِنهُمamong them وَنَحلمُand we show forbearance
وَنصدفُ عَن ذي الجَهلِ مِنهُم وَنَحلمُ
Surely pardon things they do that unsettle us,
We will turn a blind eye to those things of theirs that vex us
And turn away from the foolish among them, showing forbearance.
And turn away from the ignorant one among them and be forbearing
وَنَمنَحُand we give مِنهُمamong them مَعشَراًa band يَحسدونَناwho envy us
وَنَمنَحُ مِنهُم مَعشَراً يَحسدونَنا
هَنِيَّpleasing عَطاءٍa gift لَيسَthere is not فيهِin it تَنَدُّمُregret
هَنِيَّ عَطاءٍ لَيسَ فيهِ تَنَدُّمُ
And bestow on a band among them who envy us
And bestow upon some of them who envy us
A pleasing gift, with no regret.
A gentle bounty with no regret
وَنَكلُؤُهُمand we guard them بِالغَيبِin their absence مِنّاon our part حَفيظةًprotective zeal
وَنَكلُؤُهُم بِالغَيبِ مِنّا حَفيظةً
وَأَكبادُناand our livers وَجداًwith anger عَلَيهِمat them تَضَرَّمُblaze
وَأَكبادُنا وَجداً عَلَيهِم تَضَرَّمُ
And guard them in their absence, out of our protective zeal,
And we will guard them in secret from us carefully
While our livers blaze with anger at them.
While our livers ache for them in pain
فَلَيسَfor ... is not بِمَحمودٍpraiseworthy لَدىamong الناسِpeople مَنthe one who جَزىrepays
فَلَيسَ بِمَحمودٍ لَدى الناسِ مَن جَزى
بِسَيِّءِwith the evil ماthat which يَأتيcommits المُسيءُthe wrongdoer المُلَوَّمُthe much-blamed
بِسَيِّءِ ما يَأتي المُسيءُ المُلَوَّمُ
For people do not praise the one who repays
For it is not praiseworthy before people that one should repay
With the evil the much-blamed wrongdoer commits.
Evil with the evil done by the blamable offender
سَأَحمِلُI shall bear عَنon behalf of قَوميmy people جَميعَall كُلومِهِمtheir wounds
سَأَحمِلُ عَن قَومي جَميعَ كُلومِهِم
وَأَدفَعُand I ward off عَنهُمfrom them كُلَّevery غُرمٍfinancial burden وَأَغرَمُand I pay the cost
وَأَدفَعُ عَنهُم كُلَّ غُرمٍ وَأَغرَمُ
I shall bear all my people's wounds in their stead,
I will bear all the rage of my people
And shield them from every financial burden, paying the cost myself.
And ward off from them every debt and pay
