لَيتَif only الَّتيthe woman who سَخِرَتmocked مِنّيat me وَمِنand at جَمَليmy camel

If only the woman who mocked me and my camel
I wish she who mocked me and my camel
had tasted, as I have, fear and journeys,
Would taste what I have tasted of fear and journeys,
وَمِنand of طِلابpursuit وَطُلابٍand pursuers ذَويpossessing حَنَقٍrancor

and pursuit, and pursuers filled with rancor,
And of students full of rancor
who cast angry looks toward me.
Who glare at me angrily with their eyes.
إِمّاif ever تَرينيyou see me وَسِرباليand my tunic يَطيرُflies كَماas

If you see me, my tunic flying as
Either you see me and my garment flying as
the arrow of a mighty, unflinching man flew—
The wild doves of Karam flew not subservient,
إِنif يَقتُلونيthey kill me فَآجالُthen the appointed deaths الكماةِof warriors كَماas

if they kill me, warriors' appointed ends, as
If they kill me, the deaths of the valiant, as
I have been told, are violent deaths; there is no shame in being killed.
I was told, are death without disgrace.
وَإِنand if نَجَوتُI survive لِوقتٍuntil a time غَيرهother than it فَعَسىthen perhaps

And if I survive to another time, perhaps I shall—
And if I survive for a time other than this, perhaps
and every soul has its appointed time and measure.
Each soul is bound for a time and decree.
ياO رَبِّmy Lord قَدalready حَلفَhave sworn الأَعداءُthe enemies وَاِجتَهَدواand exerted themselves
أَيمانَهمtheir oaths إِنَّنيthat I indeed مِنamong ساكِنيthe dwellers of النارِthe Fire
O my Lord, the enemies have sworn, making most solemn
O Lord, the enemies have sworn and strove
their oaths, that I am among the dwellers of the Fire.
Their oaths that I am of the inhabitants of the Fire.
أَيَحلِفونَdo they swear عَلىon عَمياءَblind ignorance وَيَحَهُمُalas for them
مَاwhat علمُهُمtheir knowledge بِعَظيمِof the One great in العَفوِpardon غَفّارِever-forgiving
Do they swear in blind ignorance? Alas for them!
Do they swear against the blind and ignorant?
What do they know of Him whose pardon is vast, the Ever-Forgiving?
What is their knowledge of the great forgiving?
إِنِّيI indeed لأَرجوsurely hope مِنَfrom الرَّحمَنِthe Most Merciful مَغفِرَةًforgiveness
وَمِنَّةًand a boon مِنfrom قُوامِthe upholder of الدينِthe faith جَبّارِmighty
I surely hope for forgiveness from the Most Merciful,
I hope for forgiveness from the Merciful
and a boon from the mighty upholder of the faith.
And favor from the Sustainer of the steadfast religion.
وَماand I do not أَخافُfear هَلاكاًdestruction بَينَbetween عَفوِهِماthe pardon of them both
وَماand does not يَفوتُهُماelude them both المُستَوهِلthe frightened one السارِيthe night-traveler
I fear no destruction between the pardons of them both,
I do not fear destruction between Their pardon
nor does the frightened night-traveler elude them.
And nothing escapes Them, the fleeing evildoer.
إِلَيهِماto them both مِنهُماfrom them both أَنجوI flee عَلىin وَجَلٍdread
كَماas نَجاfled خائِفٌa frightened man خاشٍfearful لآثاريof my tracks
To them both I flee from them both, in dread,
To Them from Them I escape in trepidation
as a frightened man fled, fearing my tracks.
As a fearful wary one escaped the vestiges.
أَناI الغُلامُthe youth عَتيقُthe freedman of اللَّهِGod مُبتَهِلٌsupplicating earnestly
بِتَوبَةٍin repentance بَعدَafter إِحلاءٍsweetening وَإِمرارِand embittering
I am the youth, God's freedman, earnestly pleading
I am the boy freed by God supplicating
in repentance, after bringing sweetness and bitterness.
With repentance after error and elapse.
خَلَّيتُI abandoned باباتِways of جَهلٍfolly كُنتُI used to أَتبَعُهاfollow them
كَماas يُوَدِّعُbid farewell to سَفرٌtravelers عَرصَةَthe courtyard of الدارِthe home
I have abandoned the ways of folly I used to follow,
I have abandoned the gates of ignorance I used to follow
as travelers bid farewell to a home's courtyard.
As a journey bids farewell to the courtyard of home.
إِنِّيI indeed لأَعلَمُsurely know أَنِّيthat I سَوفَwill يَترُكُنيleave me
صَحبيmy companions رَهينَةَa hostage to تُربٍdust بَينَamong أَحجارِstones
I know full well that I shall be left
I know that soon my companions will leave me
by my companions, a hostage to dust among stones,
A hostage to dust between stones.
فَرداًalone بِرابِيَةٍon a hill أَوor وسطَamid مَقبَرَةٍa graveyard
تسفيblow sand عَلَيَّover me رِياحُthe winds البارِحِthe hot summer wind الذَّاريthe dust-scattering
alone upon a hill or amid a graveyard,
Alone in a wilderness or amidst a cemetery
where hot, dust-scattering winds blow sand over me.
The winds of the fleeting destroyer blow over me.
