I find myself and the wolf of the wasteland close companions, after

we drew near, each of us recoiling and frightened.

Whenever he howls, I answer the cadence of his howling

with the chant of a sorrowful man who dies and is raised again.

    وَأَمكَنَني لَو أَنَّني كُنتُ أغدِرُ

    I coaxed him until he came close, and grew familiar with him;

and he put himself at my mercy, had I been treacherous.

Yet no companion has ever trusted me

and then had cause to doubt me, so long as he remained unchanged.

God bless the ghoul—what a companion she is

for a frightened man in the wasteland, hiding himself!

She sang melody after melody, and kindled

fires all about me, dying down and blazing bright.

I felt at ease with her when she appeared, and grew familiar with her,

until she drew near—God sees the unseen best.

Then, when she saw that I was not frightened, and that I

was composed when the panic-stricken heart takes flight,

she drew near after that fright, until I grew familiar with her,

and I gave her my sincere friendship—God knows the unseen best.

Have you not seen me make a pact with a yellow bow of nabʿ wood,

that rings whenever I startle her, and growls

like a jealous woman whom they scorched with a co-wife,

so she spent the night railing at her beneath the tent?

    شَرابُهُم قانٍ مِنَ الجَوفِ أَحمَرُ

    She has young men who press on wherever she casts them;

their drink is crimson, red from the body's depths.

When she grows poor, she feathers them with their own wealth,

a gift to them, until what is clouded grows clear.

A vision of Umayma came visiting by night,

while remnants of the night's last hours still remained.

Oh, what joy at the night-traveling visitor who

came to me, strutting in his fine robes!

So I sprang up, my heart mortally wounded by what it held,

and my eye at times welling up and brimming over,

toward a swift white camel: the upper bones of his frame

are lofty, while the lower ones pound the earth.

I spoke to him and kept up his pace

with rods of mays wood engraved by a skilled craftsman:

"O my camel, if you reach her country

with my saddle and my body, then you are free."

And can a camel traverse what lies between me and her

of land—or a wind that travels evening and morning?

And how can you hope for her, when between you and her lies

a land of dreaded wastes, a place of terror,

while you are an outcast, concealed in a wasteland,

again and again, though sometimes longing seizes you and you emerge?

Oh, if only I knew: will spring quarters ever return,

and a summer around al-Ẓulayf, and a settled camp?

Is my slayer a woman of leisure from ʿAmir,

with strongly fragrant musk and ambergris in her sleeves?
