وَحالَفتُand I made a pact with الوُحوشَthe wild beasts وَحالَفَتنيand they made a pact with me
وَحالَفتُ الوُحوشَ وَحالَفَتني
بِقُربِnear عُهودِهِنَّtheir familiar haunts وَبِالبِعادِand at a distance
بِقُربِ عُهودِهِنَّ وَبِالبِعادِ
And I made a pact with the wild beasts, and they with me,
I swore alliance with beasts and they swore it to me
Near their familiar haunts and far away.
In the nearness of their covenants and distances
وَأَمسَىand came to be الذِّئبُthe wolf يَرصُدُنيlies in wait for me مِخَشّاًbold
وَأَمسَى الذِّئبُ يَرصُدُني مِخَشّاً
لِخِفَّةِbecause of the lightness of ضَربَتيmy blow وَلِضَعفِand because of the weakness of آديmy strength
لِخِفَّةِ ضَربَتي وَلِضَعفِ آدي
And the wolf came to lie boldly in wait for me,
And the wolf came to stalk me in the evening out of fear
Because my blow is light and my strength is weak.
Of the lightness of my blows and the weakness of my limbs
وَغَولاand two ghouls of قَفرَةٍa wasteland ذَكَراًa male وَأُنثىand a female
وَغَولا قَفرَةٍ ذَكَراً وَأُنثى
كَأَنَّas though عَلَيهِماupon them both قَطعَpieces of البِجادِstriped woolen cloth
كَأَنَّ عَلَيهِما قَطعَ البِجادِ
And two ghouls of a wasteland, a male and a female,
Treachery of a barren desert male and female
As though pieces of striped woolen cloth lay upon them both.
As if the sheep’s saddle had been broken between them
