أَلاah! لَيتَif only شِعريmy knowledge هَلwhether تَغَيَّرَchanged بَعدَناafter our departure
أَلا لَيتَ شِعري هَل تَغَيَّرَ بَعدَنا

عَنِ العَهدِ قاراتُ الظُلَيفِ الفَوارِد
Ah, if only I knew: have they changed since we left—
Oh, would that I knew if after us
Al-Ẓulayf’s isolated rocky hills—from how we knew them?
The hills of leaves still send their streams,
وَهَلand whether رامَmoved away عَنfrom عَهديmy recollection وُديكَWudayk مَكانَهُits place
وَهَل رامَ عَن عَهدي وُديكَ مَكانَهُ
إِلىto حَيثُwhere يُفضيflows out سَيلُthe torrent of ذاتِDhāt (possessor of) المَساجِدal-Masājid (the mosques)
إِلى حَيثُ يُفضي سَيلُ ذاتِ المَساجِد
And has Wudayk moved from its place as I remember it,
If still your love beyond our troth
To where the torrent of Dhāt al-Masājid flows out?
Endures, where ancient minarets gleam.
