لَمُشتَبِهاsurely alike, the two of us الأَهواءِinclinations مُختلِفاdifferent, the two of us النَّجرِstock; origin
لَمُشتَبِها الأَهواءِ مُختلِفا النَّجرِ
By your life, I and the male ostrich in a wilderness
By your life! Though I and the oppressor are in a barren land,
Are surely alike in our inclinations, but different in stock:
With differing passions, confused inclinations.

ألاah! ياoh! لتقليبِat the turning of القُلُوبhearts وللدَّهرِand at time
ألا يا لتقليبِ القُلُوب وللدَّهرِ
Two friends in sincere affection after long enmity.
After long enmity, a friend of pure heart,
Ah, the turning of hearts—and time!
Oh! How hearts fluctuate! And how fate does confer!
لَعَمريby my life لشخصُsurely the form of الذيبthe wolf والذِّيبُand the wolf جاهِدٌstriving

By my life, the form of the wolf—though the wolf strives
By my life! The wolf's person and the wolf are struggling,
Against me—and the form of the ghoul in the barren land
Against me, and the ghoul's person in the barren land.
أَحَبُّdearer إلىto قلبيmy heart منthan الإنسhuman beings طلَعَةًas a sight
أَحَبُّ إلى قلبي من الإنس طلَعَةً
ولوand even if حدثونيthey told me بالغنيمةِof booty والأَجرِand reward
ولو حدثوني بالغنيمةِ والأَجرِ
Are dearer to my heart to behold than human beings,
More beloved to my heart than mankind at dawn,
Even if they told me of booty and reward.
Even if they speak to me of spoils and rewards.
