لَعَمرِيby my life لَقدindeed حَفّتْshe tended معَاذَةُMuʿādhah ضَيفَهاher guest
لَعَمرِي لَقد حَفّتْ معَاذَةُ ضَيفَها
وَسَوّتْand she prepared عَلَيْهِfor him مَهْدَهُhis bed ثمّthen بَرّتِshe showed kindness
وَسَوّتْ عَلَيْهِ مَهْدَهُ ثمّ بَرّتِ
By my life, Muʿādhah indeed tended her guest,
And prepared his bed for him, then treated him kindly.
فَلَمّاbut when بَغَاهَاhe sought from her نَفسَهَاher body غَضِبَتْgrew angry لهَاon her behalf
فَلَمّا بَغَاهَا نَفسَهَا غَضِبَتْ لهَا
عرُوقٌveins نمَتْhad grown وَسطَamid الثرَىthe soil فاستَقرّتِthen taken firm root
عرُوقٌ نمَتْ وَسطَ الثرَى فاستَقرّتِ
But when he sought her body, there rose in anger for her
Veins grown deep within the earth and firmly rooted.
وَشدّتْand she tightened علىupon ذيone bearing مديَةِa knife الكَفّthe hand مِعصَماًa wrist
وَشدّتْ على ذي مديَةِ الكَفّ مِعصَماً
وَضِيئاًradiant وَعَرّتُand she bared نَفسَهاherself فاستَمَرّتِthen stood firm
وَضِيئاً وَعَرّتُ نَفسَها فاستَمَرّتِ
She gripped a knife in her hand, her wrist
Fair and radiant; she bared herself and stood firm.
فأمّتْthen she aimed بهاwith it فيinto نحرِهhis throat وَهوَwhile he يَبتَغيwas seeking الthe
فأمّتْ بها في نحرِه وَهوَ يَبتَغي ال
نّكَاحَsexual intercourse فَمَرّتْthen it passed فيinto حَشَاهُhis innards وَجَرّتِand dragged through
نّكَاحَ فَمَرّتْ في حَشَاهُ وَجَرّتِ
She aimed it at his throat while he sought
Intercourse; it passed into his innards and dragged through.
فَثجّthen he gushed blood كأنّas though النيلَthe Nile فيin جَوْفِthe hollow of صَدْرِهِhis chest
فَثجّ كأنّ النيلَ في جَوْفِ صَدْرِهِ
وَأدْرَكَهَاand overtook her ضُعْفُweakness النّسَاءِof women فخَرّتِso she fell
وَأدْرَكَهَا ضُعْفُ النّسَاءِ فخَرّتِ
He gushed blood, as though the Nile were within his chest.
And women's weakness overtook her, so she fell.
