When will you know how much I adore you, O man

for whose sake I would sell the world and all it holds?

O you, for love of whom I defied cities

in their entirety—and I shall go on defying them.

If you asked for the sea, I would pour it into your eyes,

or if you asked for the sun, I would cast it into your palms.

“I love you”—I write it upon the clouds,

and tell it to the birds and the trees.

“I love you”—I engrave it upon the water,

and pour it as a drink for the grape clusters and the goblets.

I love you, O sword that spilled my blood,

O story I do not know what to call.

I love you—try to help me,

    for whoever began the tragedy brings it to an end;

    وإن من أشعل النيـران يطفيهــا

    and whoever opened the doors closes them;

and whoever lit the fires puts them out.

O you who smoke in silence and leave me

at sea, raising my anchor and casting it down.

Do you not see me drowning in the sea of love,

while the waves chew my hopes and cast them away?

Come down a little from my lashes, O man

who still kills my dreams and brings them to life.

Enough of playing the lover's role with me

and choosing words you do not mean.

How many letters I imagined you would send,

and roses you would give brought me joy.

And how often I went to a promised meeting that never was,

and how often I dreamed of dresses I would buy,

and how often I wished you would ask me to dance,

and my arm bewildered me—where should I lay it?

Come back to me, for the earth stands still,

as though it had fled its seconds.

Come back—for in your absence I wear no necklace,

nor have I touched my perfumes in their bottles.

For whom is my beauty, for whom the silk shawl, for whom

are my braids, which I have been growing for years?

Come back as you are, whether clear skies or rain,

for what is my life if you are not in it?
