grape clusters and apples would flow from it.

And if you opened my arteries with your knife,

you would hear in my blood the voices of those who have gone.

so how can I forget, with cardamom's fragrance filling the air?

    ووجه "فائزةٍ" حلوٌ و لمـاح

    This is Abu al-Mu'tazz's place—waiting;

and Faiza's face is sweet and radiant.

Here are my roots, here my heart, here my language.

So how can I explain? Can love be explained?

so will Haifa and Waddah forgive me?

What ails Arabism, that it looks like a widow?

Are there no joys in the history books?

And poetry—what will remain of its authenticity

if a swindler and a flatterer take it over?

And how can we write while locks are in our mouths

and every second a bloodthirsty killer comes for you?

I carried my poetry on my back, and it exhausted me.

What remains of poetry when it rests?
