If the eyes of the stars grew dim,

and the moon’s smile grew still,

    and the vineyards’ greenness vanished,

and the roses withered and scattered,

you were, for me, a star, velvety

to the touch, pouring forth as a spring of fragrance and light.

From the gleam of your eyes, I had the hue

of the soft moon on nights of warmth.

My inspiration was a tale from you, in which

were a thousand and one things of rose fragrance.

You were, for me, O my violet, the dawn

    of an enchanted, unseen beauty.

    And when time extinguished

    every love I had carried,

and the darkness of space enfolded

    every light I had drunk,

from the clarity of your face I had a beginning

for songs of love, and love, and love.

And from the two stars—your eyes—open up

for my life the traces of two thousand paths.

From the gleam of the brow, from the feel of the cheek—

silken—from the blackness of the lashes:

a passage for beauty from the shore of the

unknown; its radiance anchors beside my heart.
