لِطَوارِقِbecause of the night visitors of الهمsorrow الَّتيthat ترِدُهcome to him
The lover lay awake, and his sleeplessness revisited him
The lover's wakefulness returned to him,
because of sorrow’s night visitors that come to him.
Due to worries that afflict him,
وَذَكَرتand I remembered منthe one رَقَّتgrew tender لَهُfor him كَبديmy liver
وَابىand he refused فَلَيسَso does not تَرِقgrow tender ليfor me كَبدُهhis liver
And I remembered the one for whom my liver grew tender,
And I remembered how my liver softened for him,
and he refused, so his liver does not grow tender for me.
Yet his liver does not soften for me,
لاnot قَومُهُhis people قَوميmy people وَلاnor بَلَديmy land

His people are not my people, nor is my land
Neither are his people my people, nor his land my land,
his land, so that we might be neighbors for a time.
So we could be neighbors in his land someday,
وَوَجدتُand I felt وَجداًanguish of love لَمdid not يَكُنbe احدanyone

And I felt an anguish of love that no one
And I found a passion no one before me
before me had felt from ardent longing,
Had ever felt for a girl so graceful,

except Ibn Ajlan, made lovesick by
Except Ibn ‘Ujalān who lost himself in love
Hind; his grief then carried off his life.
For Hind and wasted away in his yearning.
