My two friends, visit the woman of ʿĀmir and see
My friends, visit Al-Amiriyya and see
whether affection remains with her or is cut off.
If affection for it still remains or is severed
وَقولاand tell, you two لَهاto her انif يَعتَزِلكhe keeps away from you فَلاthen there is no قَلىhatred
وَلكِنَّهُbut he عنout of رقبَةfear يتجنبُkeeps away
And tell her: if he keeps away from you, it is not from hatred;
And say to it, “If it abandons you, never mind,
but he keeps his distance out of fear.
But it avoids your neck out of caution.”
يَرىhe sees دونَكمbetween himself and you منsomeone whom يتقيhe fears وَهوwhile he آلِفdevoted
لكُمto you وَلَهُand he has منfrom دونِكُمbetween himself and you مترقبُa watcher
He sees between himself and you someone he fears, though he is devoted
It sees besides you one who is Godfearing yet intimate with you
to you; and between himself and you, someone keeps watch on him.
And it and he watchfully wait besides you
فَصدso he turned away وَماyet not يَسطيعhe can صرمكbreaking with you انَّهُindeed he
وَلَوeven if صَدَّhe turned away رَهنa captive فيin حبالِكَyour ropes منشبُcaught
So he turned away, yet cannot break with you; indeed he,
So bar the way and your jaws cannot repel him
even if he turns away, is a captive caught in your ropes.
Even if they barred the way, he would cling to your ropes
