أرىI see الناسَthe people منbecause of لَيلاكَyour Layla سَقماsickness وَقُربهاand nearness to her
أرى الناسَ من لَيلاكَ سَقما وَقُربها

حياءَ كما الغَيث الَّذي انتَ ناظِرُه
I see people sick because of your Layla, and nearness to her
I see the people sick from your absence, and their nearness
As modesty, like the rain you await.
Is like shyness, as the thirsty awaiting rain.
وَلَوand if سَأَلتَyou asked لِلنّاسِfor the people يَوماًone day بِوَجهِهاby her face
وَلَو سَأَلتَ لِلنّاسِ يَوماً بِوَجهِها

سَحاب الثُريّا لاِستَهَلت مَواطره
And if one day, for the people, you appealed by her face
If you asked the thundering clouds for people one day,
To the Pleiades’ clouds, their rain clouds would surely pour.
They would pour down their overflowing showers.

And whoever keeps wealth in reserve and safeguards it,
He who keeps property and defends it from loss
Neither Time preserves it nor stinginess increases it.
Neither time will keep it, nor excessive stinginess.

And whoever has a sturdy bone and hopes with it
And he who bears the great cross of hope
To break Time’s rod—Time will break him.
To break the rod of fate, fate will break him.
