وَلَقَدand indeed مَضىhas passed حَولa year لهنَّover them مُجرَّمcomplete
Do you dimly discern the familiar traces of the deserted camps?
The deserted ruins deluded my acquaintances,
And indeed, a full year has passed over them.
And indeed a year has passed for them in criminality.
وَلَقَدand indeed وَقَفَتI stood عَلىat الدِيارthe dwellings لِعلَّهاhoping they might
بِجَوابِin reply رَجعthe return تَحِيَّةof a greeting تَتَكَلَّمspeak
And indeed, I stood at the dwellings, hoping they
And indeed she stood at the abodes hoping
Might speak in reply, returning a greeting,
That with an answering return a greeting would speak.
عَنconcerning عِلمknowledge ماwhat فَعلdid الخَليطُthe company فَماbut they did not درتknow
إِنّيindeed I (apparently intended as أَنَّى, 'where') توجهheaded بِالخَليطِwith the company الموسمthe festival season
With knowledge of what the company had done—but they knew not
About knowing what the amalgam did, but I did not know,
[Where] the festival season had taken the company.
That he went towards the amalgam at the season.
وَلَقَدand indeed عَهِدتI knew بِهاin them سَعادSuʿād وَإِنَّهاand indeed she
بِاللَهِby God جاهِدَةstraining to the utmost اليَمينthe oath تقسمshe swears
And indeed, I knew Suʿād there, as she
And indeed I had known her as happy, and she
Swore by God with her most solemn oath:
By God, swears a solemn oath with her right hand.
إِنّيindeed I لاوجهsurely the most esteemed منof those who تكلَّمspoke عِندَهاin her presence
باليّةwith an oath وَمخالفand a dissenter منwhoever يَزعُمclaims
That I was the most esteemed of those who spoke in her presence,
That I do not face one who speaks in her presence
On oath—and whoever claims otherwise is a dissenter.
As irrelevant and one who claims to oppose.
فَلهاso she has لَدَيناwith us بِالَّذيfor what بَذَلتshe bestowed لَناon us
وُدlove يَطولُgrows long لَهُfor its sake العَناءsuffering وَيَعظُمُand grows great
So, for what she bestowed on us, we hold for her
For she has with us, for what she spent for us
A love for whose sake suffering lengthens and grows immense.
A love whose hardship lengthens and magnifies
