Did the timeworn dwelling stir your longing?
The winds of your love have stirred the ancient abode -
Yes, and in it are traces of what saddened you:
Yes, and thereby landmarks from what pained you.

Tent-peg holes, a ragged, circular remnant,
Tents of tent-pegs and a wandering retreat -
Still in place, and soot-dark stones crouching at the campsite.
Settled yet with disheveled interior.

Indeed, a dove’s lament for parting startled me,
The cooing of a dove mourning separation has startled me -
On a branch of a bān tree; doves answered her.
I answered it on a branch with sighs.

Calling out—as for the one they wept for, the memory of him
Whether the voices crying are from those who are leaving, their pact is old -
Is old; but their grief is everlasting.
Or whether it is their endless laments.
