By my life, if evening finds you seated at al-Farsh,
with ʿAbbūd and ʿUdnah—or Ṣafar—as your two companions,

then make for Ṣabā or Tamīm, heading upland,
toward a campsite known long ago, following its trail.

Lightning in al-Shām summoned its people, and they hastened away;
and I have seen no guide more harmful than rain.

You must surely replace your heart and eye with others,
or else fate will come straight for your life's core.

My two friends, in all the time you have lived, have you ever seen—
has one who was harmed ever longed for the one who harmed him?

Yes, sometimes misery intrudes,
veiling the hearing and sight of Adam's son.
