وَلاnor جارa neighbor بيتa house ايُّwhich of يَوميكyour two days أَجودmore generous
By God, no stranger knows,
None knows, man of dignity and grace
nor a next-door neighbor, which of your two days is more generous:
Nor neighbor, which of thy days is best
ايومis it a day إِذاwhen الفَيتَهyou find it ذاpossessing يَسارَةprosperity
فَاِعطَيتand so you give عَفواًfreely مِنكَfrom you امor يَومa day تُجهَدyou are hard-pressed
is it the day you find prosperous,
The day when thou art flush and freely give
and so give freely of yourself, or the day you are hard-pressed?
Or time when straitened, yet generous as the rest
وَإِنand indeed خَليلَيكَyour two close friends السَماحَةgenerosity وَالنَدىand bounty

And indeed, your two close friends—generosity and bounty—
For friends of thine are bounty and virtue
abide in kindness as long as you live.
Ever-present while thou remain blest
مُقيمانboth abiding لَيساneither is تارِكيكَleaving you لِخَلَّةbecause of hardship

They abide, neither leaving you because of hardship
Ever-present, and never leaving thee
brought by time, until both are lost when you are lost.
Till time deprive us when thou art at rest
