وَيَومand on the day اللَوىal-Liwā ابكاكmade you weep نوحlamentation حَمامَةa dove
هُتوفloud-calling الضُحىthe forenoon بِالنوحِin lamentation ظلتshe kept تفجَعgrieving
And on the day at al-Liwā, a dove’s lament made you weep,
On the day of parting, the dove wept like Noah,
Loud-voiced in the forenoon, she kept lamenting in grief.
The morning coos with weeping lingered,
فَقُلتso I said اتَبكيdo you weep? ذاتَone possessing طوقa neck-ring تذكرتshe remembered
هَديلاHadil وَقَدand already اودىhe perished وَماand not كانَexisted تُبعTubbaʿ
I said, “Do you weep for a collared dove that remembered
I said, do you weep for one with a collar, remembering,
Hadil, who had perished before Tubbaʿ existed?”
Hudhail, after he passed away though he was not followed,
وَأَدريand I know وَلاand not أَبكيI weep وَتَبكيand she weeps وَماand not دَرَتshe knew
بِعَولَتِهاwith her wailing غيرother than البُكىweeping كَيفَhow تصنَعshe acts
And I know, yet do not weep; she weeps, yet does not know
And I know why you don’t weep and you weep,
How to do anything with her wailing but weep.
A widow cannot do but weep, what else can she do,
وَلمand did not تَرshe saw ماwhat تَبكيshe mourns وَاِترُكand I forsake ماwhat ارىI see
وَتَحفَظand she preserves ماwhat تَبكيshe weeps لَهُfor it وَأَضيّعand I neglect
She has not seen what she mourns, while I forsake what I see;
You did not see why you weep, leave what I see,
And she cherishes what she weeps for, while I neglect it.
And guard what you weep for, while I waste away.
