    Ah, dwelling-place abiding at ʿAnbab,

may the morning clouds water you, from fold and distant pasture,

with a cloud trailing rain-fringes: as for the hills beneath its rain,

they drink their fill; and as for every valley, it runs brimful.

Ah, has word reached the falcon, Ibn Marwan, that I

am turned away from him at the gates and barred?

And I waited today, and yesterday before it,

at the gate until the sun was about to set.

And whenever I seek entry, I am turned back by

the dread of Qays and the iron-braced gate.

And my family are far away in a land; they have no

breadwinner there but me, nor anyone to seek a living.

Will you then reunite me with them on a stout, swift-paced camel,

despite weariness—a tawny one of Ibn Marwan's noble camels,

a sire of young she-camels, if you wish to use him as a stud,

and firm of stride, wearied under two riders?
