By your life, the dwelling at al-Qabal that

I passed without visiting its people surely drives me onward.

When I do not meet Layla, it is as though I hang suspended

by two things, fluttering between a plain and a lofty peak.

Yet, if I wished, my ardent longing would be stirred

within me by ruins that leave eloquent speakers tongue-tied.

By your life, O Umm Malik, love

from you surely takes hold of my heart—God sees me.

And at the valley's bend, high on the mountain pass, stands a dwelling,

spacious and open, yet my breast feels constricted there.

And my passing by without speaking to its people

is more bitter than the death I shall taste.

And what might the tale-bearers say

except to say that I am in love with you?

Yes, the tale-bearers spoke truly: you are dear

to me, though your character has not been free of flaws.

Night gathers around me the edges of my love for her,

just as gussets join the edges of a shirt.

Does the east wind's breath greet me, then stir my longing—

an enticer, with the coolness of Umm Hassan's front teeth?

As though there were wine upon her canine teeth, mixed

with dew-water from night's end by an evening cupbearer.

And I tasted it only with my eyes, gazing intently,

as one watches a lightning-flash issuing from a cloud's crest.
