حَلَفتُI swore فَلَمand did not أَفجُرswear falsely بِحَيثُby the place where تَرَقرَقَتrippled
دِماءُthe blood الهَداياof the sacrificial beasts مِنfrom مِنىًMina وَثَبيرِand Thabir
I swore—and swore no false oath—by the place where rippled
the blood of sacrificial beasts from Mina and Thabir:
لَنِعمَexcellent indeed was الفَتىthe young man عالىraised high بَنوthe sons of الصَلتِal-Salt نَعشَهُhis bier
وَأَكفانُهُand his shrouds يَخفِقنَfluttered فَوقَabove سَريرِa funeral couch
a splendid man indeed was he whose bier the sons of al-Salt raised high,
his shrouds fluttering above the funeral couch.
كَأَنَّكَas though you ياO اِبنَson of الصَلتِal-Salt لَمdid not تَحمِprotect مُجحِراًa hard-pressed man
مَضافاًseeking refuge وَلَمand did not تَجبُرbring relief to فِناءَthe courtyard of فَقيرِa poor man
As though you, O son of al-Salt, had never sheltered a hard-pressed man
seeking refuge, nor brought relief to a poor man's courtyard;
وَلَمand did not تَقضِfulfill حاجاتِthe needs of الوُفودِthe delegations وَلَمand did not تَقُلsay
لِبيضٍto fair-faced men مَصاليتَresolute اِرحَلواset out بِهَجيرِin the midday heat
nor fulfilled the needs of delegations, nor said
to fair-faced, resolute men, 'Set out in the midday heat!'
رَأىhe saw فيamong المَطاياthe riding-camels ذاتَone having أَشعُبَa hump تامِكٍtowering
فَكاسَتthen she hobbled بِرِجلٍwith a leg فيat المُناخِthe camels' resting-place عَقيرِhamstrung
He saw among the riding-camels one with a towering hump,
and she hobbled with a hamstrung leg at the camels' resting-place.
فَظَلَّتthen remained عِباقُflocks الطَيرِof birds تَعفوseeking food مُناخَةًsettled on the ground
عَلىover سَقَطٍscraps مِنof لَحمِهاher flesh وَبَقيرِand a slit-open carcass
Then flocks of birds lingered, settled and seeking food,
over scraps of her flesh and her slit-open carcass.
فَليتَthen, would that المَطاياthe riding-camels كُنَّhad been عُرّينَstripped of saddles بَعدَهُafter him
وَلَمand not تُطلَبِbe sought الحاجاتُfavors بَعدَafter كَثيرِKathir
Would that the riding-camels had been left unsaddled after him,
and no favors had been sought after Kathir.
