أَتُترَكُare ... to be left alone? عارِضٌʿĀriḍ وَبَنوand the sons of عَدِيٌّʿAdī
وَتَغرَمُand pays the penalty دارِمٌDārim وَهُمُwhile they are بَراءُinnocent
Are ʿĀriḍ and the sons of ʿAdī to be left alone,
Shall the innocent be blamed while the sons of Adi are guilty?
while Dārim pays the penalty, though they are innocent?
And Darim punished when they are free from fault?
كَدَأبِas is the custom with الثَورِthe bull يُضرَبُis beaten بِالهَراويwith clubs
إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle عافَتِrefuse to drink البَقَرُthe cows الظِماءُthirsty
Like the bull that is beaten with clubs
Like the ox that is beaten with staves
when the thirsty cows refuse to drink.
When the cows are cured of their thirst.
وَكَيفَand how تُكَلِّفُyou burden الشِعرىSirius سُهيلاًCanopus
وَبَينَهُماand between them both الكَواكِبُthe stars وَالسَماءُand the sky
And how can you burden Sirius with Canopus,
How can you assign to Suhail the task of poetry
when the stars and the sky lie between them?
When between them are the stars and the heavens?
