بِنَفسيwith my life (I would ransom them) خَليلايَmy two dear friends اللَذانِthe two who تَبَرَّضاdrained drop by drop (both of them)
بِنَفسي خَليلايَ اللَذانِ تَبَرَّضا
دُموعِيَmy tears حَتّىuntil أَسرعَswiftly wore away الحُزنُgrief فيin عَقليmy reason
دُموعِيَ حَتّى أَسرعَ الحُزنُ في عَقلي
I would give my life for my two dear friends, who drained, drop by drop,
With myself a friend who has rejected me
My tears, until grief swiftly wore away my reason.
My tears so that sorrow might quicker reach my mind
وَلَولاand were it not for الأَسىconsolation through shared grief ماnot عِشتُI lived فيamong الناسِpeople بَعدَهُafter him
وَلَولا الأَسى ما عِشتُ في الناسِ بَعدَهُ
وَلَكنand yet إِذاwhen ماever (emphatic particle) شِئتُI wished أَسعَدَنيjoined me in mourning مِثليsomeone like me
وَلَكن إِذا ما شِئتُ أَسعَدَني مِثلي
And were it not for consolation, I would not have lived among people after him;
And were it not for sorrow I would not live among men after him
And yet, whenever I wished, someone like me would join me in mourning.
Yet if I wish, one like me could make me happy
