A greeting, as the sweet-scented one greeted you,

    Or else, as the breeze blew with the dawn;

And remembrance, like the song of a dove in a grove,

And longing, like the doves' yearning for their nest.

A salutation from one who would ransom you from every calamity—

May you be shielded from death by my life, my family, and my wealth.

And a love that grows fresher with the days,

Firmly rooted between my ribs and breast.

And why not, when you have already bestowed every marvel

Of generosity, inscribed upon the full moon's face?

You have given humankind the water of nobility and generosity,

And brought forth the ripest blossoms in the garden of glory.

I shall turn to the south wind, hoping I may

Entrust it with a whispered secret that falters in my breast.

For if the world has shown us a scowling face,

Then it is the world's way to make demands upon the noble.

So woe to days that wage war upon the wise,

And exalt those of low merit and worth.

And are you anything but glory's spreading tree, which bore fruit

Among us, so we gathered the ripe fruit of pride?
