I said: the supple bough resembles you in its graceful bending,
I said: the slender branch resembles you in its suppleness,
and so does the gazelle of the secluded sanctuary, in neck and elegance.
and the gazelle of the thicket, in neck and charm.

Indeed, your beauty bewildered me when
Indeed, your beauty bewildered me when
I measured it against the full moons, in every trait and description.
I compared it with full moons in portrayal and description.

O lovely one of coquettish charm, truly within my heart
O you of lovely coyness, in my heart there is
is a fire of longing born of love that is never quenched.
a fire of yearning born of love that is not quenched.

Whenever loveliness doubled,
Whenever your loveliness grows twofold,
the yearning in my heart doubled.
my heart grows weaker with longing.

Once you knew no withholding, like my tears;
Like my tears, you once knew no turning away;
now you have grown more averse than my eye’s tears, and harsher.
now you are more hostile than my eye's tears, and harsher.

Deliverance, deliverance, O cavalry of my consolation!
Rescue, rescue, O cavalry of my solace!
For passion’s army has truly passed beyond...
For the army of passion has truly gone too far.

How can a devotee of passion conceal love,
How can love be hidden in one bound to passion,
when his ardor for you is plain and does not remain hidden?
whose yearning for you is plain, not concealed?

Do not make my love for you still more ardent;
Do not increase my longing for you in love;
some of the yearning I bear is more than enough.
some of the yearning I bear is more than enough.

O cupbearer serving cups from his two eyes,
you have made me drink yearning neat.
you have made me drink longing undiluted.

O north breeze, blow, for
...sensed, within the folds of your wafted scent, a fragrance.
my heart has sensed a fragrance from the folds of your wafting.

You singled me out with a favor from you, graciously;
And you have kindly graced me with a blessing from you;
indeed, without it my heart cannot be healed.
for my heart cannot be healed without it.

May my father be ransom for a young gazelle, slender of figure,
May my father be ransom for a young gazelle of delicate stature,
who spread curtains of night across the daylight.
who spread a veil of night over day.

Among all people here, his nature is gentle,
His character among the people in our midst is gentle,
and to describe his figure only heightens its grace.
and his stature, when described, grows still more graceful.

Ruler of my heart, my inmost heart, and my body—
I have become suspended between life and death.
I am now suspended between life and death.

I was almost hidden from calamities’ very gaze.
I nearly vanished from the eyes of misfortunes.

Should your fingertips trace a single letter,
If your fingertips trace a letter,
my heart and longing will trace what is not hidden.
my heart and longing write what is not hidden.
