فَتَكنا بِمَسعودِ بنُ عَمرٍو لِقيلِهِ

فَتَكنا بِمَسعودِ بنُ عَمرٍو لِقيلِهِ

لَبِبَّةَ لا تُخرِج مِنَ السِجنِ نافِعا

لَبِبَّةَ لا تُخرِج مِنَ السِجنِ نافِعا

We assassinated Mas‘ud ibn ‘Amr for saying

We attacked Mas'ud ibn 'Amr for his saying

To Babbah, 'Do not release Nafi‘ from prison,

To Labbah, "Do not release Nafi' from prison,

وَلا تَخرُجَن مِنُ عَطِيَّةَ وَاِبنَهُ

وَلا تَخرُجَن مِنُ عَطِيَّةَ وَاِبنَهُ

فَخُضنا لَهُ شَوباً مِنَ السُمِّ ناقِعا

فَخُضنا لَهُ شَوباً مِنَ السُمِّ ناقِعا

Nor release ‘Atiyyah and his son from it.'

Nor should you release 'Atiyyah and his son."

So we mixed for him a deadly blend of poison.

So we prepared for him a draught of poison to drink.

وَكانَت لَهُ في الأَزدِ حالٌ عَظيمَةٌ

وَكانَت لَهُ في الأَزدِ حالٌ عَظيمَةٌ

وَكانَ لِما يَهوى مِنَ الأَمرِ مانِعا

وَكانَ لِما يَهوى مِنَ الأَمرِ مانِعا

And he had great standing among the Azd,

He held an exalted position among the Azd,

And he defended whatever course he favored.

And prevented what he desired in the matter.

فَقالَت تَميمٌ نَحنُ أَصحابُ ثارِهِ

فَقالَت تَميمٌ نَحنُ أَصحابُ ثارِهِ

وَلَن يَنتَهوا حَتّى يَعَضّوا الأَصابِعا

وَلَن يَنتَهوا حَتّى يَعَضّوا الأَصابِعا

Then Tamim said, 'We are the avengers of his blood.'

Tamim said, "We are the avengers of his blood,

And they will not desist until they bite their fingers,

And will not desist until they bite their fingers,

وَيَصلَوا بِحَربِ الأَزدِ وَالأَزدُ جَمرَةٌ

وَيَصلَوا بِحَربِ الأَزدِ وَالأَزدُ جَمرَةٌ

مَتى يَصطَلوها يُصبِحِ الأَمرُ جاشِعا

مَتى يَصطَلوها يُصبِحِ الأَمرُ جاشِعا

And are scorched by war with the Azd—the Azd are a live coal.

And make war on the Azd while the Azd are embers,

Whenever they face its heat, the situation will turn dreadful.

When they stir them, affairs will become turbulent."

فَقُل لِتَميمٍ ما أَرَدتُم بِكِذبَةٍ

فَقُل لِتَميمٍ ما أَرَدتُم بِكِذبَةٍ

تَكونُ لَها الأَوطانُ مِنكُم بَلاقِعا

تَكونُ لَها الأَوطانُ مِنكُم بَلاقِعا

So tell Tamim: 'What did you intend by a lie

Say to Tamim, "What you wanted with a lie,

That will leave your homelands desolate, emptied of you?'

Will make the lands because of you in ruin."
