I said to her when she forbade me to weep:

“Do you reproach me over Malik, Umm Khalid?

For if my brothers were struck down, while

death’s lurking agents missed your mother’s sons,

then for every mother’s sons a night will come

when none of their brothers remains but one.

Leave me: even if I do not weep, I have not forgotten his memory,

even if my visiting women urge me to bear my grief.

Leave me: how many a worthy man have I lost,

a noble brother of mine, like an Indian sword’s tip.

Would that I could have enjoyed his life longer,

at the price of my wealth, newly gained and inherited,

and ransomed his life with the palm of my right hand,

so that my fingers and forearm would have parted from me.

Then we would have lived with three hands between us; and

true fellowship in life is nothing but giving it with mutual praise.

Have you not seen that I, after Qays and Malik,

and Arqam, still enrage those I contend with?

And Amr in the valley of Man'ij, when I buried him—

and I have not forgotten a grave at Dhat al-Wasa'id.”
