لعمري لنعمَ المرءُ يطرقُ ضَيفُةُ
إذاwhen بانَhas passed منof ليلٍa night التمامfull length; the longest night هزيعُa portion
إذا بانَ من ليلٍ التمام هزيعُ
By my life, truly fine is the man whose guest comes by night,
By my life! How good for a man to knock as a stranger
when a portion of the longest night has passed;
When the night approaches its end and all is ruined

بَذولٌ لما في رحله غيرُ زُمَحٍ
إذاwhen أبرزَbrings into the open الحورthe wide-eyed ones الروائعَجوعthe lovely ones; hunger
إذا أبرزَ الحور الروائعَجوع
generous with what is in his dwelling, no miser,
Generous when in his saddlebags there is nothing but want
when hunger brings the lovely, wide-eyed ones into the open;
When he shows the ladies his burning desire

when the sun in the morning sky looks as though it were,
When the sun rises in the sky as though
because of drought, red dye overlaid with blotches.
It were a bride carried from her bedchamber veiled
