    I prepare myself

    to open the night.

    يفتكُ بالقمر المُستقرِّ على راحةٍ للسَّماءْ؛

    This sudden stillness unsettles,

    ravages the moon resting on the palm of the sky;

    I prepare myself to wound the star

    so that it loses its way and does not follow the lovers

    أتهيَّأ كيْ أبذرَ الغيمَ

    to the rose of the impossible, tearing the shirt of darkness;

    I prepare myself to sow the clouds

    تستقي ظمأ منْ عُيون، كأنْ لا تنامْ؛

    on a balcony for calling, when a loneliness

    draws thirst from eyes that seem never to sleep;

    I prepare myself to disown all my poetry.

    I may wash for prayer with the unseen, seeking forgiveness for my words,

    أتهيَّأ كيْ أقطفَ الشَّجرَ المُتحَولَ

    and disown only the linguistic clamor that arises before my hands;

    I prepare myself to pluck the changing tree

    وحين يَحُطُّ على وتر، والبداهةُ جسرٌ أخيرْ؛

    from the lightness of the linguistic element when it flies

    and when it lands on a string, while spontaneity is a final bridge;

    I prepare myself to borrow meanings

    and offer those vessels to those standing

    on the leap of water, higher up, with no mountain. How shall I find shelter?

    I prepare myself to wander through my wonder:

    is it poetry’s solitude, or the words’ slip into a moment,

    or my hands trembling a little toward the ember’s cheek?

    كلَّما الطَّيرُ حلَّقَ بالأرض ضوءًا لها؛

    I prepare myself to take the sun by her hand so she may return to her nest

    whenever the bird makes the earth soar as light for her;

    I prepare myself for the voice to sit between speech and me, and to guard it

    from the hiss of eyes; otherwise, I prepare to sweep it away.

    في كتابِ قرأتُ به خبرا لنْ أفصٍّلَ ما أهملَه؛

    I prepare myself to carry the shadow from me to its shadow as a trace of me, and to make it beautiful

    in a book where I read a report; I will not elaborate on what it left out;

    I prepare myself to bring the passersby out of memories,

    and to weave the ear of grain

    أتهيَّأ كيْ أفتقَ الضَّوءَ حتَّى يُسرَّ، وأنْ أرتقَ الساقية

    into my talk with the wind about this matter;

    I prepare myself to split open the light until it is gladdened, and to mend the watercourse

    أتهيَّأ كيْ أجمعَ الفجرَ

    with springs of my own, and encircle it with the remaining image;

    I prepare myself to gather the dawn

    منْ مخابئها القدَريَّة تعدو بها خارجَ الأمكنة؛

    into a moment of my own, and to bring the horses out

    of their fated hiding places, galloping beyond places;

    I prepare myself to explain the matter to the window:

    Do not look out on anything but yourself. Be the mirrors,

    أتهيَّأ كيْ أقنعَ الأرضَ أنِّيَ لستُ أدورُ، وأنْ أدفعَ الجلبة

    and be the reflection of air on two sides at those angles;

    I prepare myself to convince the earth that I am not turning, and to push the uproar

    أتهيَّأ أنْ أتأولَ باسميَ أسماءَها

    away from threads of smoke that fly, and to close the arena;

    I prepare myself to interpret her names through my own name,

    and to attempt a kingdom that I lose, then ask about her condition:

    Why did you entice my name toward a language whose burdens I used to carry?

    أتهيَّأ كيْ أخدشَ الوردَ. بُستانُه فستانُه والزَّمانُ غلامُ وأفرشَ بردا على وجنتيه كأنِّي سلامُ؛

    I prepare myself for the camel, despite the phrase’s cunning, to pass through the eye of its needle, between a wilderness panting like a lion and a sky with its earrings;

    I prepare myself to scratch the rose. Its garden is its dress, and time is a boy; I spread coolness upon its cheeks as though I were peace;

    في يديَّ بقيَّته تكتفي بي، ولا تجزعُ؛

    I prepare myself for the swans to disappear at my celestial lake, as it leaves

    its remainder in my hands, content with me and unafraid;

    منْ بيته الرَّعويِّ، وأنْ نذهبا حيثما لا أنا؛

    I prepare myself to draw the star toward me on foot, and to pull the clouds

    from their pastoral home, and for us to go wherever I am absent;

    أتهيَّأ كيْ تصهلَ الأحصنة / الهُويَّةُ .. أسماؤُها تغسلُ الأمكنة / منْ تضادِّ العناصر في جَسدِ الأزمنة؛

    I prepare myself to prepare myself, conjuring a moon that lingers on a night visit, until night wraps its breaths around me; it washes for prayer when they speak.

    I prepare myself for the horses to neigh—the identity; their names wash places of the clash of elements in the body of times;

    أتهيَّأ كيْ يَسكنَ الشَّجرُ مُطمئِنا إلى ذاته لأؤلِّبَ غصنا

    I prepare myself for my steps to turn away from a wall that breathed blue like air, with no roof to guard it from a sky the color of delirium;

    I prepare myself for the tree to rest, assured of itself, so that I may incite a branch

    against a forest that made room for one step and ended as firewood.
