اكْتُمْكَ عنِّي

ولا تأثمْ، وكنْ سَفَرا

ولا تأثمْ، وكنْ سَفَرا

Hide yourself from me

and do not sin; be a journey.

اخرجْ إليكَ

اخرجْ إليكَ

بكلٍّ يتَّقي شذرا

بكلٍّ يتَّقي شذرا

Go out toward yourself

with a whole that shuns fragments.

لا تَدْجُ إلا

لا تَدْجُ إلا

على تلويحةٍ سفرَتْ

على تلويحةٍ سفرَتْ

Do not grow dark except

over a wave of the hand that unveiled itself,

كأنَّها الفجرُ

كأنَّها الفجرُ

بالسَّفح الذي عبَرا

بالسَّفح الذي عبَرا

as though it were dawn

on the slope it crossed.

إذا تقرَّيتَ

إذا تقرَّيتَ

أستارًا فظنَّ بها

أستارًا فظنَّ بها

If you search through

veils, imagine within them

نبرًا أثيرًا

نبرًا أثيرًا

تراءَى فيكَ فاستترَا

تراءَى فيكَ فاستترَا

a cherished tone

that appeared in you, then hid.

وإنْ تدانيتَ

وإنْ تدانيتَ

حتَّى خلتَني أثرًا

حتَّى خلتَني أثرًا

And if you draw near

until you take me for a trace

إليكَ خلتُكَ

إليكَ خلتُكَ

أنِّي سالكٌ خَدَرا

أنِّي سالكٌ خَدَرا

toward you, I take you for

myself, traversing numbness.

وإنْ تناءيتَ

وإنْ تناءيتَ

يمتدُّ الطَّريقُ بنا

يمتدُّ الطَّريقُ بنا

And if you draw away,

the road stretches out with us

كما الحروفُ

كما الحروفُ

ويرتدُّ الصَّدَى خبَرَا

ويرتدُّ الصَّدَى خبَرَا

as do the letters,

and the echo rebounds as news.

إذا التقينا

إذا التقينا

وَقَدْ لا نلتقي سُوَرًا

وَقَدْ لا نلتقي سُوَرًا

If we meet—

though we may not meet as surahs—

وأنتَ تُلقي

وأنتَ تُلقي

ولا تُلقي النِّداءَ سَرَى

ولا تُلقي النِّداءَ سَرَى

while you utter

and do not utter the call, it travels by night.

وتستقي

وتستقي

لحظةً بيضاءَ بذرتُها

لحظةً بيضاءَ بذرتُها

And you draw

a white moment whose seed is

فيضُ التَّجلِّي

فيضُ التَّجلِّي

وتُبقي لحظةً أثرَا

وتُبقي لحظةً أثرَا

the outpouring of revelation,

and leave a moment as a trace.

وأنتَ وحدَكَ

وأنتَ وحدَكَ

لولا قلتَ: أنتَ معى

لولا قلتَ: أنتَ معى

And you would be alone,

were it not that you said, 'You are with me,'

لولا أقولُ:

لولا أقولُ:

كأنِّي لا أنا انتثَرا

كأنِّي لا أنا انتثَرا

were it not that I say:

'As though I—not I—were scattered.'

وأنتَ منِّيَ

وأنتَ منِّيَ

رُؤيا وحدةٍ صُوَرًا

رُؤيا وحدةٍ صُوَرًا

And you, from me,

a vision of oneness in images.

تَعَدَّدَ الشَْكلُ

تَعَدَّدَ الشَْكلُ

تتلُو شمسُه القَمرَا

تتلُو شمسُه القَمرَا

Form became manifold;

its sun follows the moon.

فلا هُمَا

فلا هُمَا

مُدركان اللَّيل أوَّلُه

مُدركان اللَّيل أوَّلُه

So neither of them

overtakes the night; its beginning,

حيالَ أخره

حيالَ أخره

بالوثبةِ ائتزَرا

بالوثبةِ ائتزَرا

facing its end—

they girded themselves with a leap.

ولا أنا أنتَ

ولا أنا أنتَ

نمشي، والظِّلالُ بنا

نمشي، والظِّلالُ بنا

Nor am I you.

We walk, and with us the shadows

تمشي وئيدًا

تمشي وئيدًا

فلا تأسُو الخُطى شجَرَا

فلا تأسُو الخُطى شجَرَا

walk slowly,

so the footsteps do not heal trees.

كأنَّ غابتَنا

كأنَّ غابتَنا

مِنْ ضلعِنا نذرتْ

مِنْ ضلعِنا نذرتْ

As though our forest

had vowed, from our rib,

أنَّا إلى فتيةٍ

أنَّا إلى فتيةٍ

مُستقطرينَ سُرى

مُستقطرينَ سُرى

that we were bound for youths

distilling night journeys.

يا القَطْرُ

يا القَطْرُ

أوراقُنا ابتلَّتْ بلائحةٍ

أوراقُنا ابتلَّتْ بلائحةٍ

O rain,

our leaves were soaked with a list—

أوراقُها

أوراقُها

فمحوْنا الخطَّ والعُمُرا

فمحوْنا الخطَّ والعُمُرا

its leaves—

so we erased the script and the lifetime.

قلنا: نقيضان

قلنا: نقيضان

لكنَّ الوُضوءَ غفا

لكنَّ الوُضوءَ غفا

We said: 'Two opposites,'

but ablution slumbered

في مقلتينا

في مقلتينا

ولكنَّ الوُضوءَ عرَا

ولكنَّ الوُضوءَ عرَا

in our eyes,

yet ablution came upon us.

ونحنُ نلقفُ

ونحنُ نلقفُ

بالسُّكنى نقائضَنا

بالسُّكنى نقائضَنا

And we catch

our contradictions through dwelling.

يا ألفةً

يا ألفةً

تتمادَى غربةً قَدَرَا

تتمادَى غربةً قَدَرَا

O intimacy

stretching on as estrangement, as fate.

ما نحنُ كُنَّا.

ما نحنُ كُنَّا.

كتمْنا كلَّ بارقةٍ

كتمْنا كلَّ بارقةٍ

We were not.

We concealed every flash

عنَّا، وكُنَّا

عنَّا، وكُنَّا

كأنَّا نتَّقي شَذَرَا ..

كأنَّا نتَّقي شَذَرَا ..

from ourselves, and we were

as though we shunned fragments.
