Tell me, 'I love you'—for the world and all within it

flutters for me when you give me its harbors.

I sailed through longing's husky voice; I see

only you as waves—so where are its places of exile for me?

I sailed within myself, as though I did not carry myself

into the maze; its sand-laden winds scatter me.

And I said to myself: Whose are the world and its lisp

when I follow my own tracks through its hidden recesses,

when I hide from myself to recognize myself

in your eyes? Yours are the world and all within it.

Tell me, 'I love you,' and I shall draw a moon for fragrance.

Nothing resembles it in pride and purity.

When I draw a mouth for it, it pours down as a string

over the far reaches, and color roams in camouflage.

And if I set my mind on it as enchantment, it draws near shyly,

as though its footsteps gave a hint of the secret.

And if its song smiles at me in languor,

    time conceals metaphors and similes.

As though I were not myself—a lifetime that erased scattered gems—

when I write fragrance with life, in praise.

Tell me, 'I love you'—life is withdrawing

from me toward you as butterflies you call.

They flew toward you, as though I did not pluck them

from the garden as roses to offer them as gifts.

As though I alone were the perfume poured

among the poems, if love is their caravan guide,

by my hand; with it I clasp my heart to my journey,

as though I were a straying soul—may it never have a guide.

I called to my shadow: Bring the night for me to pace,

until I see you—I, a vision you echo.

Tell me, 'I love you'—my pages are scattered,

and autumn has eyes in their margins.

    أرقتُ فيها كَأنِّي مِنْ غواشيهَا

    I read my collapse in them, within a rhyme's folds;

I lay sleepless in them, as though I were one of their veils.

And I kept remembering that I was still here,

until their shroud disowned me in the folding.

I fear for myself when my pages keep coming

to me with questions, tears their betrayer:

Is my night, with its stars, born of their scattering,

or did their Najashi gather up the still pages?

Tell me, 'I love you,' and a cloud will rain for joy,

for the meadow has sprouted a dream in the corners of its eyes.

Love's water is a stolen moment, its seasons lush,

as its stairways rise with watering.

I reach toward it, my beloved, then sip it,

as though I were Salsabil in meeting it.

I pounce upon it with all my love; I pluck it,

and efface myself in the bends of its watercourses.

My heart is against me, my beloved, when I know it,

and I know no phantom among its remnants.

Tell me, 'I love you'—one bewitched by my tents

lost his way, and their nights shaded him.

And the night is mine whenever horses at my window

let their dictations fall from them onto my hand.

They trace through me the longing one's journey in my language,

until I stitch them a sun that keeps them company.

A sun that leans with a shimmer upon my lip,

until I sway with a world drawn from its vistas.

And the sun is mine, my beloved, wherever my sails are,

and the sea is mine—a star whose heights have tilted.

Tell me, 'I love you'—the farthest limit folds in my hand

all distances, if it is you who folds them.

    سَأرتوي منْكَ شعرًا حينَ أرويهَا

    I tell the tales. I am the Scheherazade of my tomorrow;

I shall drink my fill of poetry from you when I tell them.

And I shall lure you with the vision into my hail,

so that you vanish as presence; then I shall lure it.

And with all my love, amid my succor, I shall take refuge

in my madness as tales, for you to shelter them.

So will you interpret my vision for me, O my guidance—

my own—and O my wandering—or were you withering it?

Tell me, 'I love you'—for the world and all within it

are for you yourself—and you will give it to the world.
